The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Microbiology at Dr. R. Ahmed Dental College and Hospital is one of the oldest department in entire Eastern India. Post graduate course started with 2 in takes per year in 1992 under the guidance of Dr. R. R. Paul, who served for a long period and played a pivotal role in introducing the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) course in Oral Pathology in this prestigious institution. Presently the intake per year is 4 post graduate students per year.

This Department has a unique concept of clinical oral pathology where both surgical procedure for obtaining tissue is performed alongside reporting of the biopsied specimens.

On an average about 2000 reports are signed out per year by faculties attached to this department which gives a great scope for learning and has a robust archive of pathological slides.

Collaborative research projects are carried out with institution like IICB, ISI. ISSER, NIBMG CNCI and many more. On an average 3 major research projects are undertaken per year.

For undergraduate training this department is by far one of the best since students are given chair side training during their third professional BDS course.

The department is staffed by experienced faculty members like  Prof. (Dr.) Jay Gopal Ray, Prof. (Dr.) Anjana Mazumder  Associate profs. Dr.Debarati Ray, Dr.Basudev Mahato, Dr. Sandip Ghose and Dr.Tathagata Bhattacharjee , alongside Assistant professor Dr. Snehanjan Sarangi and Dental Surgeon Dr.Abhishek Ghosh all of whom have contributed significantly to research in the field of oral pathology, with numerous publications focusing on oral cancer biomarkers and related studies.
